Kundalini Madonnax

The figure on the right represents the Self as the universal mother. Her pink fleshy body symbolizes the sensuous material aspect of creation and her dark face with the two large eyes suggest the austere spiritual aspect. In Vedic iconography prominent eyes are always a symbol of the Self, the seer. The snakes represent shakti, the latent power of the Self. The image of the mother's body came from a remant of an art magazine I found in a trash can. Her face came from a scan of a painting of Kali, the Divine Mother, by a Russian artist I met in Tiruvannamalai, South India. The snakes came from a photo of a painting on an ashram wall.

Transcendence

To attain enlightenment the seeker must drop his or her attachment to the spiritual path. The dead Shiva represents the path. Kali represents the final victory. With the sword of discrimination she has cut off all the erroneous notions (the severed heads) about who she is. The skirt of severed hands represent her victory over doership. At the moment of enlightenment one realizes that one is not a doer, that the fruits of one's actions can not in any way change who one really is.

Heart Cave

An enhanced image of a Pahari representation of the Self in the form of the Goddess in the cave of the heart sitting on the coils of the infinite spiritual serpent power, Kundalini Shaki. In one hand she holds the lotus of enlightenment, in another a vial of nectar representing the bliss of Self realization. The third hand contains a skull symbolizing transcendence of death and in the forth a mala symbolizing spiritual practice. The small black man sitting in her lap signifies her domination of the (dark) ego principle.

Somewhere deep within the ocean of samsara (change) floats the sea shell of the Self.
