xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Saraswati

In this graphic the fire of wisdom is consuming the stone (ignorance) out of which the Self in the form of Saraswati is fashioned. She is sitting in an open lotus which symbolizes enlightenment. The lotus is fitting symbol for enlightenment because it opens in daylight and closes at night. Night is a common symbol of spiritual ignorance. Her four arms represent the subtle body: the intellect; the feelings and emotions; the ego or 'I-sense' and memory. The left hand resting on her lap represents the receptive feminine energy and the right the outgoing masculine energy. Together they stand for duality. The original icon can be found on a temple at Gangaikondacholapuram in Tamil Nadu.

xxxxxxxxxLotus Dancerx

Out of the ocean of samsara (change) sprouts the lotus of enlightenment from which emerges a dancing figure, representing the joy of knowing who one is. The monk looking on symbolizes the austere religious view.

xxxxxxxxxxxxxKali

The Self is depicted as Kali, the destroyer of ignorance. Black is an appropriate color for the Self because it is the presence of all colors, just as the Self is everything that is. It also absorbs light just as the Self accepts everything. The prominent eyes mean that the Self is awareness. The six pointed star represents the self in the form of the mind and the five senses. The words indicate the mantras that destroy self ignorance.

xxxxxxxxxxxxVishnu

The name means 'all pervading.' The rays of light coming from the Om third eye represent enlightenment.
