Does Stillness Speak?
Karen: Namaste, James. Just so that I can be clear about what the scriptures propound, could you comment on this? There’s a website called StillnessSpeaks.com. If the stillness that it’s talking about is pure consciousness, then this is not absolutely true, is it? Rather it’s the knower, the reflected consciousness, that understands and speaks, isn’t it? Pure consciousness is actionless, isn’t it? It’s just the undeniable IS-NESS, isn’t it?
James: Hi, Karen. Sorry for the delay in replying, but I have been out in the country on retreat with no internet. This is a good question. Stillness – pure consciousness – has no sense organs or mind, so it cannot speak. However, when it is associated with maya it wields all powers, so it can think and speak as if it were a human being, as “reflected consciousness.” And if reality is non-dual as scripture says (and you and I know from our own experience or through logic and reason) and there is such an object as speech, then the self would have to be the speaker. So you are right, it is undeniable IS-NESS, but it can speak. Even as is-ness it “speaks” loud and clear – although only the enlightened hear it – because it is undeniably self-evident. It “speaks” as everything that is.
