“Even This” Is an Object to You
Ned: Hi, Daniel. Could you answer this question, please? Freedom is the knowledge that what I know depends on me, but I am free of what I know.
Daniel: That’s correct. Everything depends on you, awareness, yet you remain free of everything. Freedom is knowledge of your limitless nature, awareness. It is the direct knowledge “I am the self” which will support the removal of the notion of oneself as the doer. Freedom is when you no longer identify as the limited and incomplete person.
When this self-knowledge is actualized by the jiva, he/she then no longer depends on any objects for happiness, including the person and its situation. Freedom is freedom from the person.
Ned: Is this knowing the pure, empty but full “space” behind the body-mind ?
Daniel: Let’s keep it more simple: you are the unchanging, ordinary knower of the body-mind.
Ned: Or is it the knower of even this?
Daniel: Ha! Now you’ve got it. “Even this” is an object to you. You are the knower of these written words. Ned’s thoughts, feelings and body too are known to you.
The very same awareness that watched Ned’s baby body mature into adulthood is the very same unchanging awareness that knows this experience and everything else. This obvious and plain, unborn, deathless awareness is you.
Ned: What I am trying to ask, I suppose, is does the light, i.e the self, mean just pure objectless, sensationless knowing or does it have a type of feeling associated with it?
Daniel: You are neither a feeling nor an object that can be captured by the senses. You – limitless, attributeless, all-pervasive, non-dual awareness – are the “light” by means of which all objects – including the the apparent individual person– are known.
The mind doesn’t know awareness. Awareness knows the mind.
Ned: I seem to be getting to a very subtle part of the inquiry and I feel I’m on a precipice, for when I contemplate the self, the substrate that which enables us to know objects, I’m sensing a vast freedom.
Daniel: That sense of freedom is the fruit of self-knowledge. Good for you, Ned. Though self-knowledge is not an experience, it offers the jiva a rewarding sense of fullness and rock-steady confidence.
Ned: Am I the knower of the freedom or am I the freedom itself or both or neither?
Daniel: Awareness’s nature is limitless freedom. You can’t objectify freedom but you can understand what it means to be free. The word “knower” is a synonymous term for “awareness.” The knower is free from what it knows. You are limitless freedom.
Ned: Lovely, fantastic. Thank you very much, Daniel.
Daniel: My pleasure, Ned.
Your inquiry is clearly bearing fruit and your burning desire for liberation (mumukshutva) is lovely to see.
