Burn Karma in Dreams?
Bruce: A few more questions, which again I trust will be of interest to your readers.
When you dream, do you dream as James or as the self? Since my realization, which has been getting deeper, my dreaming time has shrunk dramatically; however, in my dreams I remain identified with the body-mind rather than with the self. Is this a sign of an incomplete transformation (what you dubbed the “firefly effect”)? Are there any techniques or methods to effect full identification with awareness during the dream state?
James: Both. Sometimes I look through the eyes of an individual, but I am aware that I am not the person appearing in the dream. I observe the story of the person in the waking state and in the dream state. Sometimes the dreams are lucid. Sometimes not.
But what does it matter? Dreams are just the vasanas sprouting in the mind. The attention is turned inward and I experience the thoughts and memories (vasanas) gathered from the apparent individual, James, in the waking state. The same vasanas appear in the dream as in the waking state. They are just presented to me, awareness as the dreamer, in a different form because the sense instruments are not functioning, although the sense organs are.
What do you mean by transformation, Bruce? Who wants to be transformed? As long as you are an apparent individual you will experience vasanas, which rise from the unconscious. If there is no vasana left the person will disappear. It is the ego, Bruce, who would like to “work” on the unconscious stuff. But are you the doer? Trying to clean unconscious stuff is an endless game, particularly because you are not objective about yourself. What values are motivating the desire to purify? Do you need to be more pure, better or different? Do you have difficulty accepting your warts? The best way is to love yourself warts and all. Trying to get rid of the warts is endlessly frustrating because no matter how pure you become the voice that tells you are not okay does not go away. It only goes away when you see that you are okay with the warts.
You are the self, pure and whole and perfect. Nothing can be added or taken away from you. Nothing needs to be transformed. Relax and enjoy your self. The knowledge will do the work, in both the dream and in the waking state.
Bruce: Are there any techniques or methods for clearing karma from one’s karmic account? Are there any techniques or methods for helping clear karma from another “person’s” karmic account?
James: You mean you don’t have enough of your own stuff to work on? Do you want someone else to be different so that he or she is more lovable and happy? The short and emphatic answer to the second question is NO. What stands in someone else’s karmic account is password-protected. Only they can work it out.
When you know who you are, karma dries up without you having to do anything. Knowledge is the best purifier. But if you still think you are the doer, Bruce, you can reduce your karma in the waking state with karma yoga.
You act according to your nature and you leave the result to God. You see yourself as a tiny cell in the vast creation and that the result is never up to you, so you accept the result with a glad heart. If you would like to know more about it, read about it in the chapter on obstructions in my book or the many chapters in the Bhagavad Gita about karma yoga. It describes it in detail. Almost the whole BG is about karma yoga. It is the most powerful and great technique to clean karma.
Bruce: What is your opinion of Samuel Sagan and his Clairvision school? Are you familiar with his “awakening the third eye” and can you recommend any techniques or methods that are helpful for awakening and developing the third eye?
James: I don’t know about Samuel. Quite honestly, I know virtually nothing about any modern spiritual stuff except what people tell me. It seems I am all over the internet, but I have no knowledge about it. I am a total Vedanta fanatic. It set me free. I know there is nothing that vaguely comes close to it as a means of self-knowledge, so I don’t read anything but scripture.
But awakening the third eye means only that you “see.” It means that you know that you are whole and complete, unborn and undying, all-pervading, ordinary awareness.
It is just a symbol for knowledge and the scripture which opens the third eye. It opens from observation and inquiry.
God bless you, Bruce. You are a great guy.
