You Are Om
Peter: I’ve just got a quick question… one that will end my search once and for all, I believe.
Daniel: Your search has ended because you know who you are. But you still have a lingering doubt – which is totally natural in the initial stage of realisation.
Peter: I gained direct knowledge, but there was still this tiny bit of “jivahood” involved.
Daniel: Enlightened or not, “jivahood” will continue to dance. Just the identification to/and as the jiva will no longer fool you.
Peter: James Swartz’s chart, called “james1” in the added files, shows a little “Om” in the subtle body. How can the subtle body be conscious? It’s surely not. Now, the second chart, named “james2” in the attached files, doesn’t show an Om in maya.
When I look at the first chart, there’s still a bit of doership involved. However, viewing the second chart, it doesn’t admit of anything being conscious in maya at all. That means that the jiva is no more than an already-dead peace of meat and mind. This means I wouldn’t have to think the jiva is something real at all, because, hey, the knowledge does the work.
Daniel: I don’t have the charts, but I think we can resolve this.
There may be different chart demonstrations for different stages of delivering the teaching. A “fresh inquirer'' who has not yet puzzled together a vision of non-duality requires an easier chart. An easier chart meaning that the apparently conscious (e.g. subtle body) may just be titled as 'conscious' in the beginning stages of inquiry. Remember, Vedanta is a set-up.
You're correct, the subtle body is not actually conscious. It’s as inert as a loaf of bread.
But then again, this is a non-dual reality, so though the subtle body is not conscious, it still is just consciousness. In other words, the subtle body depends/and is made up of the Om yet the Om remains free from the subtle body. You are the Om of course.
Peter: Would you agree the second chart represents reality most accurately?
Daniel: I agree. But again, this is a non-dual reality, so either way is fine. It doesn’t matter as long as you’re able to discriminate yourself (the subject) from the objects (mithya) that appear in you. To explain your chart question in a simple way, we could even say that there is the “BIG Om” (''pure awareness''/satya) and then the “little Om” (mithya) appearing in you, the “BIG Om.”
Peter: I think I already know the answer, but would love to hear you elaborate on this matter.
Daniel: You definitely know the answer; the answer is that this is a non-dual reality. Though everything is you, you simultaneously remain free from everything. You, awareness, are the answer.
Peter: Thanks a lot. It’s clear now. I’ve done everything that’s needed to be done. Even the thought “I have not realized the self/I am not the self” is gone. How can I not be “enlightened”? I don’t do anything. I’m simply the awareness. It’s actually pretty weird. We don’t even need to talk about the light of awareness, because that’s obvious. I have a constant sense of “I’ve done everything, nothing more for me.” This comes from seeing things in the right perspective. I don’t need any authority, from anyone/anything, to be as I am. Now I know that mithya belongs to mithya. How can a bundle of thoughts know about the presence of me, awareness? Good luck to anyone trying to find this out! Time and space appear in the mind. They are not real. This whole universe is nothing more than an appearance of apparently “alive” things as inert as can be.
I have done my thing. Now let’s enjoy this prarabdha. Good, bad, it’s all the same. I also see it’s kind of embarrassing to talk about consciousness because it’s myself. I’ve also noticed that my body is completely calm. I don’t hanker after pleasures nor to escape pains. Like I said, this is my last email.
I wish you all the best.
Daniel: May Isvara bless you in everything you do!
