Thank You Is Not Enough
Seeker: Greetings, Ramji. Here is a story to share with you. ☺
Once upon a time in a faraway land (Bolivian mountains, 1972), a young wanderer happened upon a wise man. The young man had been studying The Teachings of Don Juan: A Yaqui Way of Knowledge and soon realized that this new friend understood the mystery he had been reading about. “You have to go deeper within,” the wise friend said, his eyes shining like diamonds, and then something precious awoke in the young man. “You’ll get out of it what you put into it,” he advised and then soon disappeared as quietly as he’d arrived.
The young man soon forgot about this precious gift and continued on his way. Some months later, he met another man who seemed to “know” him, and the young man trusted him and followed his guidance. Something let go inside the young traveler and suddenly the world began to dissolve. He found himself falling into this emerging oneness, the Light magnetic, until suddenly fear arose and he pulled away, his heart bursting. Although he didn’t understand what had happened and his “guide” explained nothing, he knew this was “Home.” For weeks afterward he struggled to “see” but in spite of his efforts and best intentions, fell further and further from his goal until he abandoned his guide and returned to his homeland.
Now, the young man knew that his life meant nothing unless he could return to that Love that he had innocently discovered, and so he began searching. He spent years meditating and reading, doing all manner of spiritual practices and sitting at the feet of supposedly enlightened teachers, but all his efforts were fruitless. As the years passed and the young man grew older and more cynical, he gave up the search, convinced he was not pure enough and had missed his only opportunity to be Free. He was ready to die…
Then one day he read that Freedom was not experiential, but was a matter of Knowledge and that reality was non-dual. The logic was impeccable but… what about those wondrous experiences he had had and treasured so dearly? Life was moving on and time was running out. The man decided to stop and listen afresh…
Today the man was walking in the woods with his dogs, contemplating what he’d been listening to, and realized that he was watching himself walking, watching the dogs, the trees, the snow, the path ahead and that it was all him. He was not separate from any of it. He was walking but not moving, thinking but not the thinker, and then very quietly realized that there was NOTHING to do. All his life, he believed he had to DO something to be more aware, to be more present, to “see,” to be something more than he was, but in this moment it dawned on him that he was EVERYTHING and that nothing was missing! It was silly to be seeking at all! “What do ‘I’ do now?” he asked, “For that is what ‘I’ do…” The response was wordless – prayer is all, silent prayer to understand – and gratitude, only gratitude.
The ice is melting…
Thank you doesn’t express my gratitude to you, Ramji.
