Rod: Why is it, though I can inquire into my nature as awareness and realize my unattached nature and omnipresence, does it still appear limited to this body-mind’s perceptions?
Rod: That’s a great post, Non-Doodle, thank you. And I keep returning to this question because the upadhi is not only convincing and seemingly enduring as long as the body exists, it (the illusion of limitation caused by the “spell of ignorance”) appears to be constraining in an unnatural way since it apparently contradicts the actual nature of my unconditioned self. Superimposition does appear to be “imposed” upon us, causing ignorance that is tenacious because the truth is so damn subtle.
Non-Doodle: Spot on, Rod. Hardwired ignorance + the truth, being so damn subtly OBVIOUS, offers the perfect formula for this apparent hide-and-seek game. Continuous, vigilant exposure to the teachings is the only way to establish the mind in what will initially feel as the counter-intuitive truth. Eventually the “counter” part drops away.
Behzad: Rod, even when you know that you are limitless, ever-present awareness, the mind doesn’t know that. So it will think of you as if you are the jiva (<--- old vasanas). These old vasanas will make awareness seem to be something it’s not, the upadhi.
Keep kneading this knowledge that you are always free, ever-present, limitless awareness into the mind every time it says that you are something other then limitless awareness. Sooner or later the mind will give up, stay silent, rest comfortably in awareness and be totally still and happy there.
Also, verify every time the upadhi shows up so that it doesn’t affect you, awareness. No matter what upadhi seems to appear, notice that it can never hide, veil, affect or modify you as awareness. It can never change the fact that you are birthless, changeless awareness.
When you keep seeing this repeatedly, the upadhi will start to lose its grip over you and you can stay as awareness, stay as you are.
In other words, try to move your sense of identity from the jiva to awareness until the whole thing tips over and you can stay as awareness naturally.
Actually, you are always awareness and nothing can really hide awareness, but the mind doesn’t know that, so you need to educate the mind with the truth. You need to give the mind some shots of the truth every day until it becomes infected with the truth. When the mind gets the truth, it will relax and be peaceful (sattvic) like a still shiny, bright pond.
These are some practical things you can do, and I hope it helps...
Rod: Thank you, that was super timely and “spot on,” to quote another friend.
Non-Doodle: Great share, Behzad. “Give the mind some shots of the truth every day until it becomes infected with the truth.” I love this!
