Not Our Place to Compare Teachers and Teachings
Sulaimen: Hello. I found James Swartz’s Vedanta teachings online recently and I am enjoying the journey on the spiritual path. I have studied other teachers and I wanted to know if some of the teachers I have been studying are aligned with integrity and teaching enlightenment correctly.
In various videos James has spoken about Neo-Advaita teachers, such as Andrew Cohen, and some of the mistakes they have made.
If you know any of these teachers, could you tell me if they are true spiritual teachers?:
David R. Hawkins
2. Tony Parsons
3. Rupert Spira
4. Robert Smalley
Sundari: Hello, Sulaimen. We are happy that you have found Vedanta and ShiningWorld, and hope that the enormous volume of high-level teaching on it will be of great assistance to you in your self-inquiry.
We ask everyone who writes to us to first read James’ book How to Attain Enlighentment and to read as many of the e-satsangs as possible, as every question you could think of has been thoroughly answered. We also encourage inquirers to watch as many James’ teaching DVDs as possible.
Although we often do point out what is lacking in other teachings and criticize erroneous notions, it is not our place to compare Vedanta, and the way we teach it, to other teachings and teachers.
Vedanta is a time-tested, independent, valid means of knowledge, which means that it does not belong to anyone. It offers a comprehensive methodology which is not dependent on anyone’s beliefs or opinions. It will remove ignorance if the mind is qualified to hear it and the teacher is qualified to teach it. To my knowledge, none of the names you mentioned teach pure Vedanta. Although some of them talk about awareness and can point to it, they do not have a valid means of knowledge, nor do they require qualifications to teach or for self-inquiry.
