Pray for Liberation
Sham: Good morning, Sri Ramji. I have two doubts:
1. Nisargadatta Maharaj as well as Ramana Maharshi, Dennis Waite and many others, including you, have often mentioned that, “You are a perfect being, complete, whole, and you do not need anything.”
Maybe it is true at the higher lever (Absolute), but I lack so many things and I am not perfect in this unreal world.
How do you reconcile this disparity?
Ramji: There are not two “yous,” Sham. There is one whole and complete you that thinks it is a needy, wanting, imperfect being. So you have to look into the “you” that you think you are and see if it is true that you are limited. To do that you need a means of investigating yourself. This is the purpose of Vedanta. It proves to you that you are whole and complete, pure and perfect.
Sham: 2. Sri Ramakrishna and Nisargadatta Maharaj mention that once you have desire for liberation things automatically take place. You do not have to do anything in particular. Sri Ramakrishna said that when you take one step towards God, He takes ten steps towards you. What is the real meaning of this?
Ramji: It means that the desire you have for God is just God in you wanting to be free of the ignorance that makes it think it is an incomplete, imperfect being. So if you invoke it with your actions, thoughts and feelings – if you really pray for freedom and are willing to change – things will happen that will lead you to a teacher and a teaching that can reveal your true nature to you. It is a good desire, and if you feed it properly it will turn into a raging fire and it will make your mind prepared to understand the teachings of Vedanta.
Sham: If answering this requires lot of time, please let me know the appropriate articles which throw more light on these. Thanks!!!
Ramji: No time involved, Sham. It is my pleasure to help.
