Repeatedly Return the Mind to the Self
Neil: Dear James, is this line of thinking correct?:
This ego has built up its story of enlightenment as an experience, which in “my” case has been influenced by the study of yoga. The I that I am, the simple, obvious awareness that is me, simply is, period. It is the self.
This ego is makes waves/doubts, which pull the simple, obvious awareness that is me back into identifying with it.
Observing this is discrimination and an immediate opportunity to re-identify with the simple, obvious awareness that I am because it is that which observed it.
“The discriminating mind turns its attention away from the world of objects and back to awareness over and over, until attention rests steadily on the self.” ~ How to Attain Enlightenment
“Until discrimination is perfect, the ego will get entangled in appearances and suffer.”~ How to Attain Enlightenment
James: Dear Neil, yes, absolutely. No experience is going to break the identification process for more than a very short time. Constant effort is required. It is not easy, but the alternative is worse – just letting the ego and its thoughts of limitation influence your life. At the same time you should give the Devil his due and not stress yourself to the point where you become tense and angry – or depressed because you are not making progress. A dispassionate, forgiving karma yoga attitude is necessary.
~ Love, James
