Mike: Dear James, I am a guy of 36 years who’s had some awakening experiences and insights, including some brushes with Neo-Advaita that have sufficiently nauseated me. I am really looking into the maturity issue because some vasanas have been very powerful. I believe that six years ago I realized something that may have been more than an awakening. I viscerally saw that I am awareness, and the impact upon my life has been continuous. Perhaps what remains are what you call confidence and maturity issues.
I have been reading your book Mystic by Default with much interest. I have also read some of your other writings and teachings. What I really love to see is your no-nonsense discussion of falsehoods in the modern spiritual world, inspired by the love of truth and the clarity it brings. Though I am in psychology and spiritual circles, as you know, real non-dual understanding is anathema to the clichés and vague understandings that circulate there.
I am considering attending the upcoming retreat with you in Colorado. Please let me know if I am required to provide more information or meet other criteria.
~ Sincerely, Mike
James: Hi, Michael. Yes, it is entirely possible that you realized who you are years ago – it is quite common – but did not understand that significance of the knowledge in terms of your daily life and let some binding vasanas have their way with you. If so, the only problem is a confidence/maturity issue. Freedom is just the knowledge that you are and have always been free of limitation and the confidence to live from that platform. We can chat about it if you come to the retreat.
