THE FIRE OF SELF KNOWLEDGE – €15
These commentaries on Atma Bodh, which present the essential teachings of Vedanta, was written in the Eighth Century by a great sage, Adi Shankacharya, to clarify the fundamental cryptic ideas revealed in the Upanishads, Vedanta’s source texts. It is meant to be studied before an inquirer delves into the source texts proper because it teaches the whole methodology of Self inquiry – Vedanta – in a straightforward manner, avoiding elaborate arguments. This elegant text is accompanied with beautiful illustrations suitable for meditation.
VEDANTA – THE BIG PICTURE – €15
This excellent book is based on talks by Swami Paramarthanada of Chennai, South India, disciple of Swami Dayananda Saraswati, one of India’s pre-eminent teachers of traditional Vedanta, and gives a straightforward outline of the essential teachings in clear, modern English. It includes chapters on motivations, the means of Self-knowledge, society, meditation, devotion, the five personality layers, the Self, creation of the universe, the nature of liberation and karma. It was transcribed by one of the swami’s students, and rendered into clear, simple English by Rory Mackay.
THE YOGA OF LOVE (Narada Bhakti Sutras) – €15
These ancient Sutras, given by Narada, a great non-dual devotee, are the last word on freedom and non-dual love. The Yoga of Love is an important text that addresses, debunks and contexualizes the many erroneous notions about devotion and liberation floating around in the modern spiritual world. It is a terribly important text because it conflates liberation from suffering with unconditional non-dual love, the fruit of meditative self-inquiry. Panchadasi was written in the 14th Century by a great Vedantic sage, Vidyaranya Swami. It is perhaps the most comprehensive and well-organized Vedanta prakarana text, an analysis and discussion of certain famous Upanishad mantras. It is suitable for advanced inquirers. Hearing and studying several other texts – Tattva Bodh, Bhagavad Gita and some Upanishads – prior to immersion in it is recommended.
MANDUKYA UPANISHAD and Gaudapada’s Karika – €15
The Mandukya Upanishad is considered the ‘king’ of the Upanishads because its elegant logic removes the belief that the self is a finite entity, revealing its limitless fullness. The famous commentaries of Gaudapada, a great sage of the Vedantic lineage, presents a radical “creation” teaching, non-origination (ajativada), which amount to no creation. Creation teachings are important because the Upanishads unequivocally state that reality is non-dual consciousness. If it is, then how can we explain the presence of duality, which we continually experience?
