What Do Nadis Have to Do with Gunas?

C: I have a question. In one of Ram’s videos he mentions that he’s always been in good health (apart from his heart operation) due not only to managing the gunas but the nadis. What’s a nadi and how do you manage it? He talked about clearing them. Do you have any information or can you point me to a good resource?

Sundari: The nadis are subtle energies that run the nervous and autonomic systems in the gross body. They are subtler than the nervous system and the autonomic system (digestion, circulation, etc.) and are subject to the gunas, as is everything in mithya. The way you “clean” the nadis is by managing/adjusting the gunas. For example, if something you eat upsets your digestion, change what you eat; if the bed you sleep on gives you backache, change your bed; if sitting too long gives you back/stomach/whatever problems, exercise more, etc.

But when it comes to prarabdha karma playing out, such as in my case, for instance, with my neck injury, there is not much I can do to manage those nerves that are affected, except to manage the rajas(pain) with sattva. The jiva is limited in how much it can affect Isvara – the macrocosm – but there is no limit to how much it can manage the effects of Isvara on the jiva with Self-knowledge, because knowledge is limitless. For instance, if you are paralyzed from the neck down, you have no power over Isvara other than through utilizing the mind, because everything that affects the jiva is just a thought.

I hope that answers your question!

~ Love, Sundari
